Body shaming is the action or inaction of subjecting someone to humiliation and criticism for their bodily features (thanks for the definition, Wikipedia).
Body shaming comes in a variety of flavors: fat shaming, thin shaming, hair shaming, bald shaming, height shaming, skin color, muscularity, how big or small certain body parts are… You get the idea. If it can be criticized and insulted, it has been and will be.
Why do people body shame? Insecurity is a big reason. Most of us deal with some form of body insecurity, and making fun of someone else’s appearance takes the heat off us. It also makes us feel a little better about ourselves because we’re not like THAT person.
